Det brittiska Bookerpriset, som har delats ut sedan 1969, anses vara ett av de mest prestigefyllda litteraturpriserna internationellt. Varje år har en jury i uppgift att utse vilken författare i världen som har gett ut den bästa romanen med engelska som originalspråk. Boken måste också ha getts ut antingen i Storbritannien eller på Irland.
En av de sex böckerna som hamnat på den korta nomineringslistan i år är boken The New Wilderness (Harper Collins), skriven av den amerikanska författaren Diane Cook.
Boken presenteras på följande sätt:
”A daring, passionate and terrifying novel about a mother’s battle to save her daughter in a world ravaged by climate change. Bea’s five-year-old daughter, Agnes, is wasting away, consumed by the smog and pollution of the over-developed metropolis they call home. If they stay in the city, Agnes will die, but there is only one alternative – joining a group of volunteers in the Wilderness State. (…)”
Vinnaren, som förutom äran erhåller 50 000 pund, presenteras den 17 november.
Margaret Busby, juryns ordförande, säger i ett pressmeddelande:
– The best novels often prepare our societies for valuable conversations, and not just about the inequities and dilemmas of the world − whether in connection with climate change, forgotten communities, old age, racism, or revolution when necessary − but also about how magnificent the interior life of the mind, imagination and spirit is, in spite of circumstance.
